"5 like this"
clearly they are the big 5

seriously though, who would be the big five of the 90s? lets assume offspring, greenday, rancid don't count because they all received massive commercial success. and it would be way too easy to put those bands on a generic list.
would lagwagon even make a big five?
id probably have nofx, pennywise, strung out, no use for a name, lagwagon in a top 5. those are the bands that really jump out at me as being pretty popular with all punk fans in the 90s, though im not sure. keep in mind im trying to be unbiased since im not really a pennywise or strung out fan, and would only say im a casual no use fan.
oh, i guess bad religion would have to be on that list too. perhaps they could replace one of those bands like strung out, no use, or lag

How do you get that? I just copied and pasted how many members were int he group.....
PS Pete - Lagwagon / NOFX / No Use .. and from there I have no idea. I'd throw Millencolin in, but you've said not many people really know their music. I would guess Strung Out and Good Riddance??? Maybe? I'd throw Bad Religion in but they seemed to be bigger int he 80's...I think. Punk isn't my forte lol YOU HEAR THAT FLATEARTH?

any love for the Vandals?

Post by Mallrat on Oct 12, 2011 0:31:47 GMT -5
good riddance would be one of my top 5 personal bands. but i dont know if they would ever be in a top 5 list if you were to poll 100 random people about 90s punk. millencolin i would say is the same. at least in my neck of the woods. millencolin was sort of popular for one album but never really made it to the level of pennywise.
maybe the vandals, i dunno, i never got into them

Below are the most listened bands from Last.fm, I picked a bunch of 90's punk bands.
Plays = how many times the band's song has been listened by Last.fm users. For example, if I listen to Hoss from my computer or from my phone, Lagwagon would get 14 more plays.
Listeners = how many different Last.fm users have listened to the band.
Green Day 122,930,385 plays (2,694,460 listeners) The Offspring 78,470,695 plays (2,063,506 listeners) Bad Religion 42,925,684 plays (824,133 listeners) NOFX 41,164,270 plays (817,511 listeners)
Rancid 24,634,457 plays (664,530 listeners) Millencolin 18,142,801 plays (479,879 listeners) Less Than Jake 18,057,895 plays (512,472 listeners) Pennywise 12,012,406 plays (499,259 listeners) Goldfinger 10,867,430 plays (604,290 listeners)
Lagwagon 8,475,276 plays (349,504 listeners) The Bouncing Souls 8,092,196 plays (329,618 listeners) Mad Caddies 7,498,998 plays (267,627 listeners) No Use For A Name 7,314,420 plays (351,990 listeners) Propagandhi 6,572,274 plays (195,540 listeners) Strung Out 5,351,120 plays (236,212 listeners) Screeching Weasel 3,565,283 plays (147,999 listeners) The Vandals 3,409,211 plays (223,289 listeners) Good Riddance 3,109,099 plays (169,591 listeners) Face to Face 2,899,865 plays (176,069 listeners) Satanic Surfers 1,607,751 plays (88,236 listeners) Swingin' Utters 1,172,825 plays (104,584 listeners)
It's not the absolute truth when it comes to popularity in the 90's, especially when the site was founded in 2002, but it's still better than a gut feeling.

The sounds right, except I would have included Blink 182 in there. But since they are a different genre, I would have guessed Rancid was 4th.

I forgot about Pennywise, surprised Goldfinger is so high considering their music kind slid after a few albums, and I forgot the Caddies too -- they'd be in my 5 or 10 for 90's punk

If I had my own Big 5, it would be Bad Religion, The Offspring, NOFX, Lagwagon and Jughead's Revenge. I'm glad I didn't include Green Day or Blink-182, they both used to be interesting bands back in the mid to late '90s, but Christ, they both suck! The Offspring may have sucked after Smash, but all in good fun, I still like them.

rancid doesnt count. those are the rules Whatever, buddy. All in good fun, I like Rancid (and The Offspring). And if you think that Rancid or The Offspring don't count, would you say Green Day or Blink-182 don't count either?

well, i specifically said greenday also doesnt count. blink 182 should also not count. its not that those bands arent good. its that they were crossover bands that either had major label releases or acheived such major success that it sort of makes it pointless to put them on a list. basically my list is...... top 5 punk bands that didnt get shoved down our throats on the radio or mtv.

And what about The Offspring? They were (and probably still are) like a crossover band too and did the same thing as Blink and Green Day, sign to a major label and acheive major success, but would you say they don't count either?

OK, so let me get this straight, you're saying that The Offspring, Green Day and Rancid don't or shouldn't be in the Big 5 or Big 4 just because of popularity? What a bullshit reason. Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax all belong in the Big 4 of thrash metal because of popularity, even though Metallica has sucked since Load.
In my opinion, for a Big 4 or Big 5 of 90's punk rock, Lagwagon should replace Green Day. The Offspring and Rancid are OK, but Green Day? No way, they fucking suck. So, my dream lineup would be The Offspring, NOFX, Bad Religion and Lagwagon. If there's a Big 5, my dream lineup is The Offspring, NOFX, Bad Religion, Lagwagon, and either Strung Out or No Use for a Name or maybe Jughead's Revenge (even though they were never as popular as all the other bands).

the point of the question was to get guys to think hard. its so easy to say, 'the big 5 of punk rock is offspring, green day, rancid, blink 182, and some other band that sold a million albums. maybe i need to be even more clear when i ask this question because I don't want to see any of those bands on this list. frankly I wouldve expected more from a person who's a member on a lagwagon forum. ok, lets try again, who are the 6th to 10th big punk bands of the 90s! ?
