Victor and I made the seven hour trip to San Francisco. He was thrilled, but a bit worried. He was afraid that it might be a little too loud and the crowd would be too rough.
We arrived about 45 minutes before the first band started. Heartsounds began playing and they were pretty good. They were a bit loud and I was worried if Victor could handle hours of this music. There was a female singer/guitarist who was hot, like a blond Agent M with tats.
The next band was one of Noe's favorites. They were pretty good and a bit slower than heart sounds.
After they left Victor and I got really excited. The first person we saw was Joey. Victor was thrilled to see his idol in the flesh. Then Chris came out and started to tune up and set up. I was chatting with Anna on MSN when he came out. I went to Facebook and showed him the picture of he and Annah from their New Zealand tour. I told him that Anna said "Hi" and he got a big smile on his face and said "Oh I remember her... Yes I do." He started smiling and began thinking dirty thoughts.
He then started chatting with Victor which was pretty cool. Victor was a little shy, but loved it. Then Jesse came out and we started talking and he started chatting with Victor. He gave Victor a bottle of water and you could hear the crowd go "awe..." really loud. Then Dave sat down, Superleon came out and the music began.
Lagwagon sounded amazing. Victor and I were at the very front of the audience, right next to the stage. We could actually touch Chris's pedal board if we wanted to. Chris played at few songs and gave Victor a guitar pick, which thrilled with Victor and again the audience said "awe...."
Prior to the show I saw the set list and was thrilled to see 35 songs. All the songs were from the first five CDs. Leche's set list shows all the songs that were played except for one missing song that I don't remember. Joey sounded great and the band was really tight. Joey and Chris made a couple of mistakes because they hadn't played a few of the songs in 10+ years. I never got a chance to talk to Leon because he was on the other side of the stage.
This is the first time I ever saw Dave play. Dave is amazing. He just sits there and drums without talking to the audience. He is a great drummer, but on the earlier songs it was clear that he has his own style and didn't copy Derek. It was especially evident on Tragic Vision. Both Victor and I knew that the drumming was different than Derrick's. Not better, not worse, just different.
I was surprised that they didn't make any mention of Derek. Obviously they didn't mention Ken Stringfellow either. It was great to see Shawn back out on stage. His voice was pretty terrible compared to the previous times I saw him, but he was having a blast out there. Jesse seemed really serious, and I don't know if he had a good time, if he was mad, or if he was sad. We spoke before and after the concert but we didn't get real "deep." As a parent I respect his decision to want to spend more time with his family. Damn can he play!!! Shawn was having a blast.
The song selections were amazing. They played songs that they hadn't played for years. They played all of my favorites, with the exception of Love Story and "Shave Your Head " the audience was totally into it and you could hear them sing above Lagwagon. Victor knew the words to most of the songs and the bouncers and Chris and Jesse were pretty impressed. I started worrying when the mosh pit went crazy, but I'm badass and protected Victor he didn't get pushed around all. And the bouncer made sure no one even got close to him
As always, this was a great Lagwagon concert, and probably the best one I've ever seen. I'm guessing they usually play about 20 songs, and to see them play 35 songs from their best five CDs was just incredible. They played for over two hours and it was magical. Fat Mike made a guest appearance and sang for a bit (I think on Lazy).
Joe played bass on three or four songs. Unlike Jesse, he is a picker, and quite active on stage. He seemed to be having a blast also, and is a great bassist.
It was an absolutely amazing night. During the drive home Victor listen to Lagwagon and talked about the concert and how amazing it was. He was a little stunned that Joey has such a foul mouth, but dealt with it. He's already talking about seeing The Action Design when they start touring.
